What to Expect Each Day

RAINY SEASON ACCESS
Zaagkuilsdrift is situated on a floodplain and access roads may occasionally be affected by heavy rainfall. While the workshop is scheduled towards the end of the rainy season it is not a guarantee there will be no water. High-clearance vehicles are recommended to cross a small section. The lodge does provide a 'pontoon' pulled by a tractor which will bring vehicles across if required.
The use of the pontoon, if required, will be free to workshop participants on the way in at the beginning of the workshop and on the way out at the end of the workshop.

A Bird Sanctuary Like no Other!

Guests enjoy access to productive birding routes, hides, floodplain viewing areas, and exceptional photographic opportunities where species such as crakes, warblers, waterbirds, raptors, and wetland specialists are regularly encountered. Depending on seasonal conditions and rainfall the floodplain transforms into a vibrant birding hotspot alive with activity, breeding behaviour, and an exciting variety of migratory species; Woodland Kingfisher, European Bee-eater, European Roller, Diederik Cuckoo, Jacobin Cuckoo, Yellow-billed Kite, Amur Falcon, Lesser Kestrel, Black Chested Snake Eagle and others.
Below are the main photographic locations, accessible via short walks or brief drives.
KGOMO-KGOMO FLOODPLAIN:
This is the heart of the sanctuary’s bird photography appeal. During summer rains, shallow pans and flooded grasslands attract waterbirds, African Jacana, Lesser Moorhen, Collared Pratincoles, Black winged Pratincoles, White Backed Duck, White faced Whistling Duck, Cape Teal, Yellow billed stork, Marabou Stork, Malachite Kingfisher, Giant Kingfisher, Pygmy Kingfisher, Greater Painted Snipe, African Snipe, Common Green Shank, Double Banded Plover, Temmincks Courser, Bronze winged courser African Crake,  Striped Crake, Black Crakes, Herons, Jacanas, Painted-snipe, ducks, and Migratory species. The open terrain creates beautiful low-angle light during sunrise and sunset, with clean backgrounds ideal for bird photography.
ACACIA WOODLAND BIRDING:
The surrounding acacia bushveld offers a completely different photographic atmosphere. Here photographers can work with softer woodland light, layered backgrounds, and perched bird opportunities. The gravel birding roads around Zaagkuilsdrift are renowned for woodland species and raptors. Typical photographic subjects include: Crimson-breasted Shrike Lilac-breasted Roller White-fronted Bee-eater Woodland Kingfisher Pearl-spotted Owlet Southern White-faced Owl Gabar Goshawk Early mornings are especially rewarding, with golden side-light filtering through the thorn trees

THE FAMOUS ZAAGKUILSDRIFT ROAD:
The nearby Zaagkuilsdrift Road is legendary among South African birders and photographers. The long gravel route between Pienaarsrivier and Kgomo-Kgomo passes through woodland and floodplain habitat, producing constantly changing photographic conditions depending on rainfall and season. Photographers often use slow drive-and-stop techniques here, scanning: Fence posts Roadside puddles Acacia edges Wetland margins Telegraph poles The road is also excellent for owl and nightjar photography during dawn and dusk.
COLOSSAL AVIARY & CONTROLLED PHOTOGRAPHY:
A newer addition is the enormous indigenous aviary with a sunken photographic hide overlooking a waterfall and stream. This setup allows photographers to capture endemic species in a more controlled environment while still maintaining a natural bushveld feel.
